some inspiration

I need to collect things like this in a jar and open it to look at them when I'm floundering.
For me, that’s what creativity is - playing with found objects, reconstructing things that already exist, transforming ideas or stories I already know. It’s not about the colonisation of new territory, it’s about exploring inwards, examining your existing presumptions, squinting at the archive of experience from new angles, and hoping for some sort of revelation. What really matters is whether we as readers continue to think about the things we have read and seen long after the final page is turned.

  1. Maybe you could collect them in, I don't know, a book or something.

  2. A... what did they call them.. a commonplace book.

Thanks for posting that! I was reading the quote and thinking, "that reminds me of the direction Shaun Tan was taking some of his ideas at the convention" and then saw the bottom. I hadn't realised there were essays on that site.

  3. Heh...yeah I wandered over there after reading your post K. I love the front page of his site.

And a book! I was thinking a jar more like this:

(only probably without the actual workings inside, but something that captured light and good stuff and made you feel warm and toasty when you opened it. Maybe a book would be better...but actually, the jar thing would be cool because you could just reach in and pick out a random thought. A book's so much more linear.)
